Roberta Bondar
Welcome to MissionForMemories.ca! Over the past two years, I have had the opportunity to travel across Canada and host a series of public forums about Alzheimer’s disease. The stories I heard when speaking with people at the forums really moved me and so this year, I am embarking on a new mission. I’m on a mission to collect your special memories.

About

About Mission for Memories and the 2009 Desktop Calendar

Mission for Memories is an educational program that was launched in 2006 in recognition of the 100th anniversary of the identification of Alzheimer’s disease by Dr. Alois Alzheimer. The program was designed to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s disease, its diagnosis and treatments. At its inception, Mission for Memories involved a series of educational public forums hosted by Dr. Roberta Bondar and local physicians held in cities across Canada. Dr. Bondar, Canada’s first woman in space and the world’s first neurologist astronaut, is the national spokesperson for this awareness program.

As a neurologist, Dr. Bondar understands the significance of educating Canadians about Alzheimer’s disease, as well as increasing awareness of the importance of early diagnosis and treatment. The main objective of Mission for Memories is to provide the opportunity for Canadians to learn more about Alzheimer’s disease and the importance of early diagnosis.

This year, Dr. Bondar is helping to launch the second phase of the Mission for Memories program, a computer desktop calendar that will feature 12 of the most hopeful and interesting memories as submitted by Canadians from across the country. Brought to you by one of Canada's leading research-based pharmaceutical companies, the project encourages people to share a memory or special story about themselves or about someone they know who has or is battling Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia.

Dr. Bondar chose to become involved in Mission for Memories as she believes in the value of increasing public awareness of the disease, its signs, symptoms, progression and the supports available to family to help them cope. Dr. Bondar’s interest in Alzheimer’s disease is based on her early research into the mechanisms of the disease which was the subject of her PhD post-graduate thesis. As a neurologist she has continued to follow development in this disease area with great interest.
